SMACNA exists to address issues common to member firms which impact the industry nationally. It services members' needs to improve their business environment through industry education, labor relations, standards, industry representation, and business studies.
MEMBERSHIP
SMACNA represents contractors in commercial, institutional, industrial and residential heating, ventilating and air conditioning; architectural sheet metal; industrial sheet metal; kitchen equipment; manufacturing; testing and balancing; energy management and siding and decking.
TECHNICAL STANDARDS, GUIDELINES AND MANUALS
Technical standards and manuals developed by SMACNA members have found worldwide acceptance by the construction community, as well as foreign government agencies. SMACNA standards and manuals address all facets of the sheet metal and HVAC industry, from duct construction and installation to indoor air quality, from energy recovery to roofing, from solar energy to welding, from commissioning to performing service maintenance. Currently, SMACNA has 50+ publications in circulation.
POLITICAL
SMACNA was the first construction industry trade association with a full-time office on Capitol Hill. SMACNA's legislative office plays an active role in shaping legislation affecting the sheet metal industry. This office works with Congressional committees drafting legislative language and prepares SMACNA members to testify at Congressional hearings. SMACNA has been a leader in the political action committee arena since the creation of SMAC PAC (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Political Action Committee) in 1974. Since that time, over $2 million has been raised from committed SMACNA Contractors.
LABOR RELATIONS
SMACNA's Labor Committee represents member and industry interests in the negotiation of the Standard Form of Union Agreement with the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association (SMWIA). The National Joint Adjustment Board for the sheet metal industry (NJAB), jointly sponsored by SMACNA and the SMWIA, promotes harmonious labor-management relations by providing grievance and interest arbitration and mediation services. The labor relations department conducts seminars and programs that educate contractors on such topics as labor law, bargaining techniques and dispute resolution, and keeps contractors aware of current labor relations issues.
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
SMACNA develops publications, surveys and education programs to keep SMACNA managers abreast of the best business practices that can be used for running a sheet metal and air conditioning contracting business. National and local seminars, publications and self study programs are available to SMACNA firm principals, senior managers, supervisors, and foremen on financial management, project management, managing a sheet metal contracting business and issues impacting the changing market place. Survey results on financial and computer information and practices in the industry are also available.
INSURANCE AND RETIREMENT
SMACNA sponsors a business insurance program, which includes workers' compensation, general liability and other property/casualty coverages sheet metal contractors need. SMACNA also sponsors a qualified defined contribution retirement plan for member contractors. Additionally, SMACNA offers an association professional liability plan for SMACNA Chapters.
SAFETY
SMACNA's Safety Committee develops safety programs, publications, services and videos to assist members in establishing and managing elective safety programs. SMACNA's Safety Department also communicates with Federal OSHA and EPA on issues affecting members and provides members with briefings on regulatory compliance issues.

SMACNEWS, newsletter published monthly; Membership Directory updated annually; and the Annual Report. Also publishes materials on standards, specifications, technical books, manuals and practices covering all phases of the industry.
TRAINING
The National Training Fund for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry (NTF) is jointly administered by the Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) and SMACNA through a Board of Management and Labor Trustees. Established iin 1971, the NTF and local Joint Apprentice and Training Committees (JATCs) provide state-of-the-art, hands-on training of four years to new apprentices and continuing education for journey level sheet metal workers, such as welding and testing and air balancing HVAC systems. The NTF budgets $7 million, supplemented by over $50 million annually through the JATCs, to train SMWIA members. Over $80 million has been invested in training facilities. Health and safety training are major components of these programs.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The SMWIA and SMACNA work together to expand business and employment opportunities for their members through programs such as the National Energy Management Institute (NEMI). This jointly trusteed program identifies and supports contractors seeking to expand or increase their business in the fields of indoor air quality and energy management. Certification and warranty features are essential parts of these efforts. The Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute provides another example of a joint trust that helps protect the health and safety of its members, contractors and the public in general in connection with the work and work products of the sheet metal industry. The industry also conducts an asbestos screening program for eligible active and retired members.
LOCAL SMACNA CHAPTERS
